Storm Austen and Storm Boelo bring weekend disruption to UK aviation

Aviation News UK tracked 53 flight diversion entries across the weekend as Storm Austen and Storm Boelo brought disruption to flights across the UK.
From Friday 23 October through to Sunday 25 October, airlines faced a difficult few days, with aircraft diverted away from their planned destinations and airports taking in flights that were never meant to land there.
The disruption affected a mix of domestic and international services, with Manchester, Gatwick and Stansted among the airports receiving diverted flights.
Manchester was one of the main diversion destinations over the weekend, with flights originally heading for airports including Leeds Bradford, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle ending up there instead.
Gatwick also received diverted services, including flights that had been due to land at Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast and Bristol.
Stansted was another busy diversion destination, with aircraft originally scheduled to arrive at Glasgow, Leeds Bradford and Edinburgh redirected there.
Diversions were not limited to the UK. Some flights ended up at airports including Oslo, Cologne, Dublin, Alicante, Luxembourg and Paris Orly.
The knock-on effect for airlines
A diversion does not always end when an aircraft lands at an alternative airport.
Airlines then have to work out how to get the aircraft back into position, manage crew arrangements and deal with passengers whose journeys have been disrupted.
That can have a knock-on effect on later flights, particularly when an aircraft is due to operate another service shortly after landing.
With disruption continuing across the weekend, airlines have had to keep adjusting their operations as conditions changed.
Another weather warning ahead
The weekend’s disruption comes as another weather warning has been issued for Tuesday, covering Scotland and northern England.
Airlines and airports will be keeping a close eye on conditions as the week continues, with the potential for further disruption if the weather affects flight operations.
Passengers travelling over the coming days should check with their airline for the latest information before heading to the airport.
Aviation News UK will continue following the situation and reporting on any further impact on UK flight operations.
