Bristol Airport Reopens After Runway Closure Causes Widespread Diversions

Bristol Airport has reopened following an overnight runway closure which caused widespread cancellations, delays and diversions across the UK.

Operations were suspended on Friday evening after a defect was identified on the runway, leaving departing aircraft grounded and forcing inbound flights already in the air to divert elsewhere.

Bristol Airport said:

“Due to a defect on the runway, we have suspended operations in order to assess and repair the issue. We apologise for any inconvenience. Safety is always our number one priority.”

Passengers were also advised to contact their airline for information relating to individual flights.

During the closure, inbound services diverted to airports including Gatwick, Cardiff, Birmingham, Luton, East Midlands, Manchester, Liverpool, Southend and Bournemouth.

The runway has since reopened, with easyJet flight U22839 to Pisa becoming the first departure following the closure, while Ryanair flight FR441 from Valencia was the first arrival to land after operations resumed.

Disruption is continuing throughout Saturday as airlines work to recover aircraft and crews left out of position by the overnight diversions. Bristol Airport’s live flight information shows a number of delays across today’s schedule.

Passengers travelling through Bristol Airport today are advised to continue checking the latest status of their flight before travelling.
