Qantas has taken another major step towards launching Project Sunrise, unveiling its first Airbus A350-1000ULR and confirming that the airline's ultra-long-haul flights are expected to begin in October 2027.

The ambitious project will see Qantas operate some of the world's longest non-stop commercial flights, connecting Sydney directly with destinations including London and New York without the need for a stopover.

The first specially configured Airbus A350-1000ULR was recently presented in Toulouse, marking a significant milestone for a programme that has been years in development. The aircraft forms part of an order for 12 ultra-long-range A350s that will be dedicated to Project Sunrise operations.

Unlike standard A350-1000 aircraft, the Project Sunrise fleet will feature additional fuel capacity and a bespoke cabin layout designed specifically for flights lasting close to 20 hours.

The aircraft will accommodate 238 passengers across four cabins, including First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy. Qantas has also developed a dedicated well-being zone, allowing passengers to stretch and move around during the ultra-long journeys.

Project Sunrise was first conceived as a way of overcoming the traditional limitations of long-haul travel from Australia. While flights between Australia and Europe or North America currently require a stop en route, the new aircraft will allow passengers to travel directly between cities such as Sydney and London.

The airline says extensive research has been carried out into passenger well-being, fatigue management and jet lag, with the cabin designed to improve comfort on flights that will rank among the longest regularly scheduled services in the world.

The unveiling of the first aircraft represents a significant milestone for both Qantas and Airbus, with certification and testing work continuing ahead of the planned 2027 launch.

While Perth to London currently holds the title as Qantas' longest route, Project Sunrise will take ultra-long-haul flying to a new level, further strengthening the airline's position as a pioneer in long-range operations.

With the first aircraft now complete and a launch date in sight, Project Sunrise is entering its final phase as Qantas prepares to redefine non-stop travel between Australia and the rest of the world.
